How to Use Hair Foils for Perfect Highlights

Highlights can add dimension, brightness, and a sun-kissed look to your hair. To achieve that salon-quality finish at home, learning how to use hair foils for highlights is essential. This step-by-step guide will help you master the technique and achieve perfect highlights.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following supplies:

  • Hair foils (pre-cut or cut from a large roll)
  • Highlighting kit (includes bleach, developer, and toner)
  • Mixing bowl and applicator brush
  • Comb and sectioning clips
  • Gloves and an old towel
  • Shampoo and conditioner

Step-by-Step Process

1. Prepare Your Hair

Start with dry, unwashed hair. Natural oils on your scalp will help to protect it from the harsh chemicals in the bleach. Carefully comb through your hair to remove any tangles.

2. Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into four main sections: two in the front and two in the back. Use sectioning clips to keep the hair in place. Make sure you work on one section at a time to maintain organization and precision.

3. Cut and Prepare Foils

If you are using a roll of foil, cut it into manageable pieces (about 4x8 inches). Pre-cut foils can be used as-is. Fold one edge of the foil about 1/2 inch to create a lip; this will help you grip the foil more easily and keep it in place against your scalp.

4. Mix the Lightening Formula

Follow the instructions on your highlighting kit to mix the bleach powder and developer. Wear gloves to protect your hands and use the mixing bowl and applicator brush to thoroughly combine the products.

5. Apply The Foils

Take a small section of hair from the area you are working on, about 1/4 inch thick. Backcomb the roots slightly if you want a softer transition. Place a piece of foil underneath the section with the folded edge close to the scalp. Using the brush, apply the lightening formula on the hair, starting from the middle and working your way to the ends. Fold the bottom half of the foil up to cover the hair. Then, fold the sides inwards to seal the foil.

6. Process the Bleach

Check the processing time on your highlighting kit instructions, typically between 15 to 45 minutes. Keep an eye on the foils to ensure the bleach does not over-process. Checking one foil after 15 minutes and then every 5 minutes thereafter can help you achieve the desired level of lift.

7. Rinse and Tone

Once you are satisfied with the lift, remove the foils and rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use a toner if necessary to neutralize any brassiness and achieve your desired shade. Follow the toner instructions, then rinse again thoroughly.

8. Condition and Style

Wash your hair with shampoo and apply a deep conditioner to help restore moisture. Leave the conditioner in for the recommended time to ensure your hair remains healthy and shiny. Style your hair as desired.

Tips for Success

  • Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes from the bleach.
  • Don't rush the process; take your time to section and apply foils carefully.
  • Use higher quality foils designed for highlighting, as they hold the bleach better and adhere more easily.
  • If unsure about the lightening process, perform a strand test on a small, less noticeable section of hair first.
